The Unfolding is part of my new landscape series created during the pandemic. It speaks about beauty and danger and subtly describes our place in the natural world and our tenuous relationship with the remaining wild places on earth. A traditional Cape Cod home rests comfortably close to the rocky shore. With its many windows, the house conveys a sense of life, purpose, and harmony with its surroundings. The path leading down to the rocks signifies our need for connecting to the wild as well as the untamed parts of ourselves. What used to be a large, robust tree, now shows the beginning signs of decline; it's a reminder of the impermanence of life and how things ultimately unfold beyond our control. Experience has shown me that images I introduce into my paintings often bubble up from my unconscious. The pandemic, aging, the loss of loved ones, and more are all alive in this work. InThe Unfolding, it points to the amazing beauty of nature, and the fragility and preciousness of our environment and our selves.
